Why We Chose Brylach Steading

Sometimes a place just feels different.

For us, that place was Brylach Steading.

When we first discovered Brylach, we weren't actively looking for a traditional Victorian steading in the heart of Speyside. We were simply at a point in life where we knew something needed to change.

For many years, our careers had taken us around the world. Between us, we'd worked in retail, customer experience, construction and wellbeing, spending much of our time in busy cities including London and Melbourne.

The work was rewarding, exciting and often fast-paced. But like many people, we found ourselves wondering if there might be a different way to live.

The turning point came during a winter break in the Scottish Highlands.

We stayed at Eagle Brae near Inverness and despite the snow, the cold and the short days, we found ourselves completely captivated by the landscape. Every walk left us feeling calmer, happier and more connected to nature.

On the journey home, we couldn't stop talking about it.

What if we made a change?

What if we built a different life?

The day we (finally!) got the keys

Not long afterwards, Brylach Steading appeared on our radar.

Built in 1873, the steading was originally constructed as the carriage houses and stables serving the Dunbar family's holiday estate, then known as Birchfield House.

The moment we visited, we knew there was something special about it.

The history.

The architecture.

The sense of peace.

The potential.

“We could see not only what Brylach was, but what it could become”

Since moving here, we've been slowly and thoughtfully investing in the property, restoring cottages, improving guest spaces, caring for the woodland and uncovering more of Brylach's fascinating history.

One of our first major projects was the complete renovation of The Hayloft, creating a warm and comfortable retreat while retaining its character and connection to the building's original purpose.

Other projects have included improvements across the cottages, work on the courtyard, plans to reinstate the clock tower, and developing the grounds to give guests even more opportunities to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

But perhaps the biggest surprise has been the sense of community we've found here.

We've been welcomed warmly by neighbours, local businesses and fellow residents, and we've loved sharing our favourite distilleries, walks, beaches, restaurants and hidden corners of Speyside with guests.

Today, people visit Brylach for many different reasons.

Some come for the whisky.

Some come for the coast.

Some come for family gatherings, walking holidays or simply a chance to switch off for a few days.

Whatever brings them here, we hope they leave feeling what we felt on that snowy Highland holiday all those months ago: a little more relaxed, a little more connected, and already planning their return.

We feel incredibly fortunate to be part of Brylach's story.

And we're excited to continue writing the next chapter.
